Lyophyllum decastes (commonly known as the Fried Chicken Mushroom) characteristically grow in dense cespitose clusters on the ground, usually in areas where the ground has been disturbed (roadbeds, paths, landscaping areas, buried wood.) but also in forests. Their caps are various colors of brown, often lobed, smooth and often lubricous. Gills are close or subdicurrent and whitish. The often curved stem is also whitish, and may discolor brownish. Make sure they have a white spore print before eating as some poisonous Entoloma look very similar but have pink spore prints. Other look- a- likes found in Alberta are Lyophyllum loricatum which features a dark brown cap when young and a cartilage cap cuticle and Leucocybe connata an almost identical mushroom except white throughout and wavy cap which turns purple then slowly red- purple with FeSo4. This one not edible from personal experience.
