Pluteus petasatus
Pluteus petasatus is extremely variable in appearance with a white cap, which over time forms brown fibrils concentrated in the center, or short or long dark- brown fibres forming a beautiful pattern over the entire cap. Like Pluteus cervinus, white gills are free and the spore print is pink to cinnamon pink. For some reason the gills of P. petasatus stay white for long periods of time before maturing to a nice pink color. This species is considered the best edible of the Pluteus sp, unfortunately I have had problems finding enough for a meal. Two other white Pluteus sp. that may at times appear similar to P.petasatus are P. tomentosulus and P. pellitus.
