Russula subfoetens
Russula subfoetens is characterized by it's large size, a dirty yellow strongly striated cap turning to dark brown with age, cream colored spore and a disagreeable odor. ( to me they smell like baby puke). Flesh is pale straw turning to yellow when cut and turning bright golden in KOH. This inedible mushroom is mycorrhizal with hardwoods and conifers. There is confusion with the name Russula subfoetens as it is a European species and the American version is now called Russula foetentula but others also call it Russula foetens. (take your pick) Commonly found across Alberta.
