Gomphidius maculatus
Gomphidius maculatus is characterized by its slimy pale cinnamon to reddish brown cap, a stem that has purplish hairs, bright yellow or yellow-brown at the base and blackening when handled. The only Alberta Gomphidius without a ring and it has an association with larches. Two other similar Gomphidius sp. occurs here in Alberta. Gomphidius glutinosus is purplish-grey to purplish-brown and has a ring that is usually covered in black spores while Gomphidius subroseus has pinkish to light reddish cap, most often with a ring darkened with spores. Both are found growing under spruce and fir.
